Paint and polymer durability (3)

Results for the generation of CO2 before, during, and after the UV irradiation of duplicate 100 μm PolyEthylene (PE) films pigmented with anatase (supplied by Huntsman) are
shown in the figure below.

The IR absorbance of gaseous CO2 before, during and after UV irradiation of duplicate anatase pigmented PE films. The xenon lamp output was filtered by 100 mm of water and a UV (Air Mass 1.5) filter.

The IR absorbance of gaseous CO2 before, during and after UV irradiation of         duplicate anatase pigmented PE films. The xenon lamp output was filtered by             100 mm of water and a UV (Air Mass 1.5) filter.

It is apparent that prior to UV radiation there was negligible evolution of CO2 within the cell.  Generation of CO2 began immediately irradiation started and ceased immediately irradiation stopped. If irradiation was restarted, CO2 generation restarted. The sensitivity of the method is evident and allowed similar results to be obtained for unpigmented PE and for PE films pigmented with the less photo-catalytically active rutile form of TiO2.
